Voicemail

The service that answers in your absence, records a message, and hands it back to you — the phone's century-old safety net.

Voicemail is the complete service that takes the call when you don't answer: greeting message, recording of the caller's message, storage in the voicemail box, playback on demand. Present on mobiles since the 1980s, it was long the only answer to the missed call — and today it mourns it: its commercial performance is well known and poor.

The figure that sums it up: most callers — often cited around 80% — leave no message at all. They don't want to talk to a machine, don't know what to fit into 30 seconds, or find it simpler to call the next business. Voicemail remains useful for what it has always done: receiving detailed information from existing customers (addresses, references, availability). As the sole missed-call recovery device, it's obsolete — a text sent within seconds converts where it records silence.
