Glossary · M
Overage minute
Per-minute billing beyond the plan — the small figure that derails budgets.
The overage minute is the unit billed when usage exceeds the plan: a 500-minutes-per-month subscription consumed beyond is billed per minute, often at a unit rate higher than the plan's implicit rate. The model dominates traditional business telephony and per-minute answering services.
For a solo operator, three traps hide behind this word: rounding (does a 61-second conversation count as one minute or two?), definition (does hold time count? transfers?), and predictability (one busy month doubles the bill). The honest question to ask before signing: what's my cost in my worst month, not my average month — and what happens when I exceed it?
