Outsourcing
Entrusting a business function — here, phone answering — to a specialized provider.
Outsourcing means handing an internal function to a third party: bookkeeping, IT, or phone reception. In telephony, outsourcing historically takes three forms: pay-per-use or flat-fee remote secretarial services, the dedicated virtual receptionist, and the call center for large volumes. The economic reasoning is always the same: the hourly cost of your time versus the vendor's cost, for a task you're not best placed to do.
The hard question in phone outsourcing isn't price but knowledge: a human vendor knows your trade superficially and must reread their cards; an AI agent fed from your knowledge base answers by your exact rules but doesn't replace your judgment. Many small businesses land on a mix: AI on the permanent front line, humans reinforcing on the cases the machine escalates.
