Call center

An organized facility that handles high volumes of inbound or outbound calls, with queues, agents, and measured targets.

A call center is a structure — in-house or outsourced — built to absorb a call volume one person alone cannot handle: queues, automatic call distribution, real-time supervision, performance metrics (average handling time, abandonment rate, SLA). Inbound (reception), outbound (campaigns), and blended centers are distinguished.

For a solo operator or very small business, the classic call center is an oversized factory: its costs and commitments don't match a few dozen calls a day. Solutions scaled to that size are pay-per-use outsourced secretarial services, or more recently the AI voice agent, which offers a call center's round-the-clock coverage without its fixed costs — or its impersonal scripts.
