Call queue

The orderly holding of callers when every line is busy — with music, position, and wait time.

A call queue holds callers in arrival order when nobody can take them: music, courtesy message, position announcement ("you are number 3"), sometimes a callback promise. It's managed through indicators: average wait time, abandonment rate (the share of callers who hang up before being answered), peak hours.

The queue is an admission: it says reception capacity is below demand. Well tuned, it absorbs peaks; badly tuned, it manufactures exasperated customers — every minute of silent waiting raises the abandonment rate, and a caller who abandons a queue has already called someone else. For a very small business, the honest alternative to the queue is the offered callback: "we'll call you back in 10 minutes, keep your phone close."
