Switchboard operator
The person who answers, listens, routes, and remembers — a company's official voice.
The switchboard operator is the person in charge of the phone system: they answer on the company's behalf, identify the need, transfer to the right person, take messages, screen solicitations. In the French imagination, the trade is tied to big administrations and professional offices; in reality, it survives mainly in outsourced form — remote secretarial services, virtual receptionists — and in a new form: the AI agent.
What the trade teaches, and what automation must inherit: qualification happens in the first ten seconds (who's calling, about what, is it urgent?), tone counts as much as information, and memory — remembering that Mrs. Bertrand always calls on Tuesdays — is what turns answering into service. The operator was also the first filter for emergencies: that triage passed to AI word for word.
