Answering machine

A device that answers in your absence and records a message — grandma's answering machine, now a cloud service.

The answering machine is the device that answers calls in your absence and records messages: yesterday a cassette machine plugged into the line, today a built-in carrier feature. The term is confused with the auto attendant — one records, the other routes; the confusion costs you dearly when customers want to talk and hit a recording instead.

In a modern answering chain, the answering machine is the last link, not the first: it takes what neither you, nor a colleague, nor an AI agent could take. Its purpose has shifted — less commercial recovery (callers no longer leave messages) than receiving long information from customers who already know your habits: job addresses, appliance model numbers, access instructions.
