Telecom carrier
The company that routes your calls and texts — and whose rules decide what gets through.
A telecom carrier is a company operating an electronic communications infrastructure: the incumbent operator (Orange, born of France Télécom), the alternative carriers born of unbundling, mobile operators, and VoIP providers. The sector is regulated — by ARCEP in France, the FCC in the US — notably on number portability and market access.
For a small business, the carrier is invisible until the day it isn't: the conditional forwarding your switchboard wants to configure requires it to be enabled on the line; your business SMS delivery quality depends on its routing agreements; the portability of your long-held number goes through them. Before choosing a smart telephony tool, always check what your carrier allows — it's the most underestimated technical question in the file.
