Call waiting

The subtle tone alerting you that a second call is coming in while you're already on the line.

Call waiting is the service that signals a second incoming call during a conversation: a beep in your ear, a notification on screen. You can then put the first call on hold and take the second — or ignore it, in which case the second caller gets a busy tone or a voicemail. Without the service enabled, the second caller goes straight to the busy tone.

For a solo operator, call waiting is both a lifeline and a trap: a lifeline because it keeps the second caller from being lost outright, a trap because one brain can't run two conversations. Oddly enough, it sits at the heart of the missed-call problem: being on the phone is the leading cause of unanswered calls. The structural answers are a dedicated or multi-line setup, or conditional forwarding to a system that handles the second call — instant text, voice agent — while you finish the first.
