STOP SMS

The keyword that opts a recipient out of your messages — and the mandatory mention that goes with it.

"STOP SMS" is the mechanism by which a recipient stops receiving your messages by replying STOP — or a variant: STOP for everything, STOP TEL for calls only, STOP SMS for texts only. In France, every marketing text must mention this unsubscribe method; omitting it is a fault, and processing a STOP several days after receipt is another one.

On the business side, the complete setup holds in three rules: the mention appears in every marketing message (it costs characters, it's mandatory all the same); processing is immediate and automatic (a STOP received at night is processed before the next send, not after the holidays); and the opt-out registry entry is final — recontacting a person who said STOP isn't a follow-up, it's an infringement.
