The First Test Line: Call Yourself
Before judging any missed-call recovery solution, put it through a 10-minute test: set up a line, call, don't answer, time it. Here's the full protocol — usable with any provider.
Why this test is worth ten minutes
Every marketing page sounds the same: "instant responses," "revolutionary AI," "zero missed calls." The only reliable judge is your own phone. Ten minutes, zero cost, and more revelations than ten sales meetings.
The exercise is universal: it works with any solution — ours, a competitor's, a home-made setup. It has one more virtue: if a vendor refuses a real-condition test, the refusal is itself an answer.
Step 1: set up a line and a scenario
Set up a test line with your target production settings: hours, business name, routing rules. Then write a realistic caller script — a clogged sink at 8 PM, a quote request for a fence. The script must be precise: it's what lets you judge the relevance of the questions asked.
Two preparation details: use a number the system doesn't know yet, and keep a stopwatch handy. At Harch Signal, setup takes 48 hours with a live test before go-live — the protocol below is exactly that test.
Step 2: call, don't answer, time it
Call and let it ring until you reject it yourself. Start the stopwatch the instant you hang up. Note when the text lands: the serious target is under 10 seconds; past a minute, half of real leads have already dialed a competitor (5–10 minute decision window, public 2026 sources).
Then read the message itself: does it identify the business? Offer a direct next step ("reply here")? Mention STOP? A generic "we'll get back to you" with no continuity is a red flag — it's voicemail in a new suit.
Step 3: talk to the AI — then interrupt it
If the solution includes voice AI, call back and let it answer this time. Play the rushed caller: state your problem, then cut in mid-sentence ("wait, actually it's the floor above"). This barge-in moment separates real systems from filmed demos.
Watch whether it keeps context, answers in your language, and admits what it doesn't know. Then ask the decisive question: "how much does it cost?" An honest system points to your published rates or offers a callback — it never invents a figure.
The 8 evaluation criteria
Score each criterion from 1 to 5. 1) SMS speed — target under 10 seconds. 2) Tone: natural or robotic, quality of written and spoken language. 3) Questions asked: urgency, address, job type. 4) Interruption handling (barge-in). 5) Transfer: human escalation when the situation calls for it.
6) Summary accuracy: does the dashboard report match the conversation? 7) Channel discipline: one follow-up after 4–6 hours, not five texts. 8) Honesty: no invented prices, no invented availability. Total out of 40: below 30, the solution is eliminated.
If the test passes?
Run it again at different times: daytime, evening, a Sunday — and above all at 2 AM, where real coverage is decided. Then replay the same script on two or three solutions the same day: a comparison is only valid if the protocol is identical.
At Harch Signal, the trial includes $149 in credits and cancellation is 30 days. But stay true to the method: the real-condition test remains the final judge — not the sales pitch, including ours.
FAQ
Questions we get
Can this test be done before any commitment?
Yes — that's the point of it. Set up the test line, call, compare. With us, the live test is part of setup; with others, explicitly ask for a demo on a real line, not a recorded scene.
What if the text arrives late or never?
That's disqualifying: speed is the only KPI that truly matters for first response. Check carrier-side routing, rerun the test once; if the delay persists, eliminate the solution. A text received a minute later rarely catches a caller already gone elsewhere.
Does the AI know it's a test?
No: it handles the call as a real one — that's the whole point. Use an unregistered number and a fictional but plausible scenario — and never call real emergency services during a test; stay on the test line provided.
